We talk a lot about the fact that representation on screen matters, and can make a huge cultural impact in ways that other industries cannot. According to a 2020 GLAAD study which examined inclusion in advertising and media, when audiences who were not part of the LGBTQ+ community were exposed to storylines and characters who were, they were more likely to accept LGBTQ+ people and be supportive of LGBTQ+ issues.
Storytelling can build empathy and expose us to issues and narratives we may not experience in our own lives, whether fiction or documentary. And Director Amy S. Weber’s latest coming-of-age feature ‘A Girl Like Him’, released on digital platforms in March, is doing exactly that. In a small, close-knit town, lifelong best friends Lena Grey and Justin Beckett have always been each other’s world. But both have been holding a deep secret from the other. As another summer comes to an end, the burden of those secrets start to unravel.
‘A Girl Like Him’ is a raw, unfiltered look at teenage love, the bonds of friendship, and the painful journey of self-discovery. It explores how embracing who you truly are can mean leaving behind the person you once were—and those who may want everything to remain the same.
Lead actress Melanie Wozniak brings a stunning performance to the screen, opposite the iconic Tovah Feldshuh, and we were fortunate to go behind the scenes of ‘A Girl Like Him’ with her, to discuss more of the core themes seen throughout the film.
Born in Chile and raised in Australia, Melanie Wozniak is a dynamic and multi-talented creative force in the entertainment industry. Her acting career so far spans TV, film and video games, in both her native Australia and now in Los Angeles where she is based.
Melanie spoke with us about the importance of sharing ‘A Girl Like Him’ in 2025, a time when we are seeing backlash toward the queer community, and why it matters even more so for queer youth who deserve to grow up in a society knowing that they belong.
How did you first get involved in ‘A Girl Like Him’, and what drew you to the character of Lennon?
I got involved in ‘A Girl Like Him’ by auditioning for the role of Lena/ Lennon. After a callback and a chemistry read with the director, Amy S. Weber, I was excited to land the role.
What drew me to the character and the script was how much I connected with Lennon’s journey. Like Lennon, I’ve experienced times when I felt out of place or unable to fully be myself, which is an exhausting mask to uphold. But, just as Lennon does, I found a newfound sense of freedom and joy once I decided to embrace my true self unapologetically. It’s been incredibly rewarding to bring Lennon’s story to life, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity.
What kind of research or preparation did you do for the role?
In preparing for the role of Lennon, I used a combination of personal experience, research, and stories from within our LGBTQ+ community. When I first read the script, I instantly connected with Lennon and felt a deep desire to give them the justice they truly deserved within the story. As someone who is part of the LGBTQ+ community, I felt this role was incredibly important, as media often lacks in this area of representation.
To prepare, I dove deep into the raw, unspoken emotions that many in the community experience—the moments of self-discovery, the feeling of being misunderstood, and the beauty in embracing who you truly are. Embracing the complexities of each struggle and trying to really build out what Lennon went through before stepping into this new phase of life allowed me to create a story that was unique to them!
Can you tell us a little about working with Director Amy S. Weber, knowing this film is the follow-up to her acclaimed ‘A Girl Like Her’?
Working with Amy S. Weber was an absolute dream. I am a huge fan of ‘A Girl Like Her,’ so I was incredibly excited to be part of her next project. Amy is an incredible director who truly cares about telling meaningful and impactful stories. What I think is so special is her ability to create films that are not only entertaining but also have the potential to change the world. I don’t think anyone can watch ‘A Girl Like Him’… or ‘A Girl Like Her’ without feeling deeply moved.
The film delves into important themes like changing relationships, gender identity, and coming-of-age at a time when living authentically is so crucial to a young person’s sense of belonging in the world. What was it like to be the lead in a film that carries so much weight in terms of its social and political context right now?
Thank you to all the writers and creatives out there who are creating stories that bring these unspoken stories to life, allowing a broader sense of representation to reflect the many communities who feel severely unseen.
We need you now more than ever. Leading this film, especially in today’s social and political climate, is such an honor. I don’t take this role lightly. The weight it carries is undeniable, but if this film can make a difference in even one person’s life, then we, as a team, are winning. As said, the movie explores themes of gender identity, coming-of-age, and the struggle for authenticity—issues that are deeply relevant today and, unfortunately, issues that are not getting easier for young people.
As Lennon navigates coming out as non-binary, I saw this role as an opportunity to contribute to a crucial conversation about acceptance and self-expression. The social and political weight of the film is significant, but it only fuelled my passion to be part of this story.
What role (if any) do you see ‘A Girl Like Him’ playing in the world right now when we see a terrifying rise in hatred toward the transgender community and any discussion of gender identity outside of the binary?
We filmed this movie over 2 years ago… and it really did get released into the world when we needed it the most!
In a time that feels like we are regressing, ‘A Girl Like Him’ stands as a pillar of light. The film serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that living authentically is not only possible but essential. When we are true to who we are, we not only empower ourselves but also give others permission to do the same.
My hope is that ‘A Girl Like Him’ becomes a source of strength and inspiration for anyone struggling with their identity, offering them the courage to be true to themselves… especially right now. In a world that is so divided, I hope this film can help you realise that you are never alone, and we must continue to fight.
What do you hope audiences will feel when they see your portrayal of Lennon on screen?
I hope that the audience will feel seen. You are never not alone in your private battles. I hope that people see themselves in Lennon’s journey, recognize the universal struggles Lennon faces, and maybe even know someone who may be on Lennon’s journey. From watching Lennon, I hope viewers see that the opinions of others don’t have to define or limit you. The film challenges how people are so quick to label and judge others without understanding them, and I hope Lennon’s journey can spark conversations about the importance of support, love, and acceptance. Ultimately, I want audiences to feel empowered.
Can you share any info about your upcoming projects we should look out for?
I have some very exciting projects in the works! I can’t share any of the details just yet, but be sure to keep an eye out on my Instagram @melwoz to follow along.
Outside of your film career, what brings you joy, and what do you do stay sane in a crazy world?
Outside of my film career, I find joy in several things that help me stay grounded and sane. I’m a yoga teacher, and my personal practice is essential for reconnecting with myself and unwinding. I also love spending time in nature. Whether that means a quick getaway to the beach or escaping to a cabin in the woods, being able to recharge in these peaceful environments is key for me.
I also have my own wedding coordinating business! Being part of that special journey and helping bring a couple’s vision to life is incredibly fulfilling. Also, spending time with my mini dox, Bernard, my partner, and my friends and family brings me so much joy amidst this crazy world!
