Actress Shailene Woodley Doesn’t Wear Makeup To Hollywood Events. WTF?!?!

Is she crazy? Nope, she is just a normal, cool young chick comfortable in her own skin who doesn’t see the need to conform. Wow! What a breath of fresh air to see an actress who is well on her way to cult superstardom (thanks to her upcoming role in the Hunger Games-style big screen screen adaptation of Divergent) showing other young women that makeup, clothes, appearances and airbrushing are not what is important to her.

In fact, in this interview with Flavorwire on July 24, 2013, she outlines how everything that is important to her and what she is passionate about has pretty much zero to do with her physical appearance. The 21 year old actress, best known for her break-out role on the ABC Family series The Secret Life Of The American Teenager, and her Golden Globe-nominated role alongside George Clooney in The Descendants seems to have a clear grasp on priorities for a young woman.

The self-proclaimed environmentalist is passionate about keeping the Earth green, and is a fan of home-grown herbs.

She also opens up about why she refuses to wear a lot of makeup outside work hours and how it can affect her self-esteem.

“I saw somebody—what I thought was me—in a magazine once, and I had big red lips that definitely did not belong on my face. I had boobs about three times the size they are in real life. My stomach was completely flat. My skin was also flawless. But the reality is that I do not have those lips and my skin is not flawless and I do have a little bit of a stomach. It was not a proper representation of who I am. I realized that, growing up and looking at magazines, I was comparing myself to images like that—and most of it isn’t real.”

While she is not against getting dressed up in general, she says for certain big events like the Oscars she does enjoy it. But Shailene doesn’t want to have to hold herself ransom to a standard which excludes her natural beauty and being comfortable in her own skin.

“I don’t really wear makeup that much anyway, so part of it is just a selfish, lazy thing, and I want to be me.”

Flavorwire calls her a a hippie and describes her a weird, but in a refreshing and wonderful way. In a way that will inspire other weird girls out there to know that its ok to be a little left of center and like the things you like.

“There’s something so refreshing about having a new teen star who is prepared to be so thoroughly weird in public. The pressure to conform, among teenage girls, has always been strong…It would be nice to have a star — and role model — who’s willing to go her own way, even when we disagree with her.”

How cool to see a rising young star who is not only embracing who she is, but she is not apologizing for it and certainly not about to change anything for any industry or magazines. A great modern day feminist role model for young women who want to find that perfect balance of loving the skin you are in, and having a successful career.

We think the two go hand in hand. Once you start feeling confident, happy and fulfilled at every point in life, no matter what the situation, watch and see the opportunities it opens up for career moves, friendships and relationships. Just be you, and be the best version of you possible.
