Awesome Response To A Sexist “Show Us More Skin” Request

So, sexism still exists, but thankfully, so do men and women who are willing to fight it. We’d like to give special mention to Atomic Grill restaurant from Morgantown, West Virginia, who shut down a misogynistic request from a customer in the most badass way ever!

A clearly sexist male customer wrote a review about the restaurant on Urban Spoon and also included a gem of a comment saying how he would like the servers at Atomic Grill to “show more skin”. The comment has since been deleted, but not before it caused a bit of a stir and pissed off the restaurant owner, Daniel McCawley.

“It was brutish. I was upset. I’m a father of a 12-year-old girl and I’ve got five sisters,” McCawley said. “The way that women are treated is pretty personal as far as I’m concerned.”

YES! Hallelujah for men who see the inherent problem with sexism and how it affects women!

Instead of just voicing his disdain at the customer, as the owner he had to take the matter seriously and acted upon the request.

Atomic Grill WILL be showing more skin, but in their menu items. Specifically, a new potato skins special for $7, which will be available until memorial day weekend.

Also, 100% of the proceeds of this appetizer will go toward the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information Services.

“We took offense to the review and wanted to flip it in a positive way,” McCawley explained.

“My Facebook blew up overnight,” he said. “I really hope this will be a positive thing.”

It is important for both men, as well as women, to speak up about sexism because it is a gateway to more serious issues like rape and sexual assault. Tolerance of sexism shows a lack of respect for women, however a story like this shows that there are ways to turn it into a positive by getting creative and using it as a way to comment on a much more serious issue.

Recently a study published by Sage journals showed that young women today view sexual violence and rape as “normal”. It’s sad to think we live in a society that tolerates this behavior, and even worse, the negative trickle down effect to younger generations. Every person needs to do their part to stand against this, and that it what Atomic Grill is doing.

“When we come up with an idea of the ‘Show us some skin’ [appetizer] we never in our wildest dreams expected it to take off like this did,” said Daniel McCawley writes on the Atomic Grill Facebook page.

“We are humbled and excited that everyone has responded to it so positively. We value our employees as much as our own families, and if we can turn something negative into a positive for our community, then all the better.”

Anyone who wants to ogle a half-naked girl while eating burgers and fries is just weird… Daniel McCawley, you are an example of a real man, and you are THE man!
