Bringing Latin America’s Green Wave Movement To The United States

As the United States continues it’s backward slide on reproductive rights, making it one of only a handful of global nations to do so, the rest of the world is moving in a forward progression, especially when it comes to abortion access and rights.

The new podcast series Green Tide Rising highlights Latin America’s Green Wave feminist movement that has enabled 3 of the region’s largest countries to liberalize its abortion laws, despite heavy conservative Catholic influence, and the presence of government leaders and parties hostile to bodily autonomy.

In episode 7 of the series, hosts Asha Dahya and Monica Morales-Garcia hold a roundtable discussion with three reproductive rights activists and leaders to learn what the United States needs to do to implement some of the strongest and successful Green Wave strategies from the Global South, and why we need this movement more than ever.

Asha and Monica are joined by Colombian feminist lawyer and researcher Ximena Casas; activist, author and filmmaker Paola Mendoza; and Georgia Program Coordinator for Reproductive Justice organization Sistersong, Danielle Rodriguez. Each of these leaders share deep, personal connections to the fight for reproductive justice, and leave listeners with a sense of hope that progress is possible, even in a country which is becoming increasingly hostile toward reproductive freedom.

“Everyone has a role to play in someone else’s liberation,” said Danielle about the impact each one of us can have in this movement.
