Dear Future Moms Of Kids With Down Syndrome, This Video Might Shock You

WARNING: Watching this video will in fact melt any heart made of stone, and make you sob while you are at your desk working…

March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day and to celebrate, an advertising company released a video to show a different side to kids born with Down Syndrome.

Saatchi and Saatchi Italy teamed up with Coordown which is Italy’s National Coordination of Associations of People With Down Syndrome, to create a video which was sparked by a letter the organization received from one expecting mother on February 9, 2014.

The letter, which is revealed in the opening of the video says “I’m expecting a baby. I’ve discovered he has Down syndrome. I’m scared: What kind of life will my child have?”. This became the starting point for what has now become a viral hit. The video was released on March 13 on the Coordown Youtube channel and already has over 1.7 million views!

In the video, we see 15 boys and girls from all over Europe replying to the mother, giving her confidence and assurance that her child will live a full life and be able to do everything a child without down syndrome can.

He will be able to go to school, travel, earn money, take you out to dinner, work with his dad to fix his bicycle, and read and write, were some of the heart-warming responses.

They also acknowledged it will be difficult at times having a child with down syndrome. “But isn’t it like that for all mothers?” says one young man at the end, proving that having a child born with this condition should in no way inhibit him from living his life to maximum potential and being a freaking awesome human being.

“He’ll be able to do many things,” “He’ll be able to hug you,” and “He’ll be able to speak and tell you he loves you.” we hear as each of the down syndrome people in the video end by hugging their own moms. It is a moment that will literally bring a flood of tears to your eyes and make you want to hug your own mother today.

This is the third year in a row that Saatchi & Saatchi and Coordown have combined forces for World Down Syndrome day.

“The chosen theme for World Down Syndrome Day this year is the right to happiness and well-being of people with Down syndrome. The goal is to promote a culture of diversity and true integration into society, especially in the worlds of school and work,” says the website about the campaign.

What a beautiful way to send a positive and inspiring message. Not only to the mom who wrote the letter, but to everyone who is in the dark about what to expect with a down syndrome child. In the United States Nine out of ten babies diagnosed with Down syndrome are not given the same opportunities other children have. They are aborted.

World Down Syndrome day exists to spread awareness of trisomy 21, the genetic term for babies who inherit an extra copy of chromosome 21. This video serves to bring hope to many mothers, and shed new light on any unanswered questions. Currently, no one knows what causes the presence of the extra chromosome but Down’s syndrome is more common in children born to older mothers.
