Essential Bedroom Items For A Better Night’s Sleep

Sleep is vital to our bodies and brain. When we sleep, our bodies go into resting mode. We get rejuvenated for the next day’s activities. The recommended minimum sleeping time for an adult is 4 to 6 hours a day. Continual lack of sleep contributes to many health issues which include and not limited to heart diseases. On top of these health issues, lack of enough sleep will affect your productivity during the day. If you are struggling to get quality and quantity sleep, it could be attributed to you having a stressful, busy life or it could be because your bedroom is not conducive to getting a good night’s sleep. Here we have put together some of the things that are essential for a proper shut-eye:

Your Bed and Bedsheets

The bed that you lie on when you sleep is so crucial that you have to get the right balance in everything. Over and above getting the balance in your beddings, remember to change them regularly and have them cleaned with the correct detergents to avoid strong smells as you sleep. The right bed sheets will allow you to be cosy and not distract you when you sleep. It is recommended that you get bed sheets made from moisture-wicking fabrics. These fabrics will absorb excess moisture like sweat and keep you comfortable.

Mattress

Your mattress could be the reason you wake you feeling tired and having body aches. If your bed is not comfortable enough, you might find yourself waking up multiple times to adjust your sleeping position hence hindering yourself from quality sleep. Check and change your mattress if need be for you to be able to sleep well.

The Right Pillow

A pillow may appear like a small detail in your bed that can easily be overlooked, but it is as essential as having the correct mattress. A wrong pillow can have you waking up with a stiff neck. Finding perfect is vital to enable you to sleep better.

Duvets/blankets

Paired with your bedsheets, having the correct blanket to cover you up is crucial in having a good night’s sleep. This is to keep you warm and cosy. Your blankets should not be too heavy or too cold, and this is all determined by the weather. A blanket should always feel like you are receiving a warm cosy hug. If you have been experiencing trouble sleeping a weighted blanket can come in handy. They are designed to relieve stress and create a sense of calm and tackle the anxiety that keeps you up at night. These blankets use the same logic as to why babies are swaddled as they keep you still with minimal movements.

Sleeping Clothes

Choose pajamas that are as comfortable as possible; they should not be tight at all. They should allow you to be able to change your sleeping position smoothly. Your sleeping clothes should also be warm enough in reference to the prevailing weather conditions and be made of a material that can easily absorb your sweat.

Lighting

Your bedroom should not be brightly lit. The reason why it must be dark when you sleep has to do with the fact that the nerves in your eyes signal the brain for sleep. The bedroom lights should be kept dull. You can also wear an eye mask to shut off the light entirely. If you are worried about finding the bathroom in the dark, you can install motion lights at the ankle level, which will light your way as you go to the toilet. If you live in the city, you may not have control over the light that gets into your bedroom at night; blackout curtains can help fix that.

Block Out Noise

The reason why the bedroom is always positioned furthest from the main door is to block out noise as you sleep. There are some noises though that still reach the bedroom and can disrupt your sleep if you live in a busy neighbourhood. You can block such noises by having a white noise machine.

When you aren’t able to get enough sleep, or if the quality of sleep is poor, it can take a toll on your stress levels, memory, and emotional and psychosocial well-being. When you sleep better, you become more energetic and productive during the day. You generally become a happy and positive person, and you feel better about yourself. Maybe all these grumpy people we encounter only need a good night’s sleep and the world would be a better place.
