In a world where environmental concerns grow more pressing each day, Youth4Earth is a prime example of how the world’s youth are stepping up to lead the charge for change. Founded by California-based 17-year-old Allison Cho at the age of 15, this youth-led organization has grown into a coalition of 42 nonprofits spanning 13 countries, all working together to promote sustainability and environmental literacy. Cho’s passion for environmental justice stems from her unique upbringing in the fast fashion industry, where her Korean immigrant parents worked tirelessly to pursue the American Dream.
“I started Youth for Earth as a way to reconcile the environmental impacts I witnessed growing up and to honor the resilience of those, like my parents, whose livelihoods depend on industries such as fast fashion,” said Cho.
“At Youth4Earth, we extend empathy not only to the planet but also to marginalized communities affected by environmental degradation. Our mission is to balance the needs of people with the protection of the planet.”
Today, Youth4Earth has garnered more than 500 supporters and has empowered over 10,000 individuals, with members ranging in age from as young as 7 to 78. The organization has actively worked with groups like Youth Climate Save and Youth Climate Strike, organizing events such as the Waste Less October Campaign and the upcoming Global Climate Strike on September 20 at Los Angeles City Hall.
One of their current initiatives, the Fashion for Future Campaign, advocates for human rights in the fashion industry while promoting sustainable fashion practices.
“We’re working to ensure that people understand the human cost behind fast fashion,” said Cho. “We’ve partnered with several organizations to host awareness campaigns, conferences, and clothing drives.”
Cho’s vision is supported by passionate team members like Gabriel Oliva, the Outreach Director of Youth for Earth. Oliva emphasizes the importance of youth leadership in the environmental movement:
“It’s essential for young people to take action. We are the leaders of today, not just tomorrow,” said Oliva. “By working together and raising awareness, we can create a more sustainable future.”
In addition to grassroots organizing, Youth4Earth is making a mark in policy advocacy. The organization has endorsed six California bills related to environmental protection and has lobbied more than 38 legislative offices. “Our goal is to influence both policy and public opinion,” said Oliva. “We are actively working to drive systemic change.”
For Cho and her team, Youth4Earth is about more than just environmental activism—it’s about creating lasting, empathetic connections and fostering a global sense of responsibility.
As Cho eloquently puts it, “We’re building a movement, not just a moment.” Their social media page frequently shares articles highlighting the detrimental effects of fast fashion and other harmful practices
As global warming accelerates and impacts coastal, rural, and local communities, with increasing landslides becoming more common, Youth4Earth is committed to driving significant global change. Oliva believes that the path to meaningful change “rests with our youth, as they are the next generation who will inherit and shape the world.”
As Youth4Earth continues to grow, it offers a powerful example of how youth-led organizations can make a global impact. Cho’s advice to other young people looking to get involved? “Don’t be afraid to start. Every action counts, and even small steps can create a ripple effect. Use your voice, connect with others, and take action for the planet.”
