GUESS Goes Against Their Own Rules Choosing Their First “Brown Girl”

When you think of iconic brand Guess, you think of the blonde, buxom pouty models who are always in their campaigns. Anna Nicole Smith, Amber Heard, Claudia Schiffer, Kate Upton etc. They stick to a certain mold, bla bla bla. Well yeah, they too must’ve thought it was getting a little bland and decided to mix things up. A lot.

Meet the new face of Guess for their Holiday 2013 campaign: Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra. Yep, she’s Indian, she’s got brown skin and is an accidental record-breaker by being the first Indian girl to ever front the label.

“I’m like their first brown model,” Chopra told Women’s Wear Daily. “For a global fashion brand, for them to move their campaign into a global space, for me it’s an honor.” The other cool thing about this campaign is that it was shot by another icon, but a music one, Canadian crooner Bryan Adams.

“Being the next Guess girl was something that I would have never thought of,” she admits, “but when I met Paul, he was like, ‘You’re it. It has to be you.’”

“Chopra’s confidence, strength and sensuality reflect the qualities I always look for in a model and she reminds me of the young Sophia Loren,” Marciano told ET.

In case you aren’t familiar with this beauty, here are a couple of facts about the 30 year old. She is a former Miss India, and at age 17, Chopra became the youngest woman to win the Miss World 2000 pageant. But she wasn’t planning on a career in beauty and entertainment.

“I was an academic. I wanted to be aeronautical engineer, build planes, work at NASA … I wouldn’t go to the moon, I’d make the space shuttles.”

There’s a good reason why we are excited about Priyanka fronting the new Guess campaign. It shows they are willing to think outside the square and be more inclusive. Just like Miss USA 2013, Nina Davaluri, who is American and Indian, what you thought you knew about fashion and beauty is about to change. It’s great that iconic global brands are leading the way to show diversity.

“I’m not too American and I’m not too Indian, but I’m a global citizen,” she says, “and that’s what most people are today. And I don’t want to have to change who I am to try and fit in or cater to a certain audience. ”

Can’t wait to see these pictures in magazines. Happy holidays indeed!
