Huffington Post had a great Huffpost Live session this week, dedicated to women’s body image. The initial question was “are all these empowering body image campaigns working?” and if not, why?
We have all seen Dove’s Real Beauty Sketches campaign, which went viral and became the most watched ad campaign on youtube to date. But then why are so many young women still suffering from unhealthy images of themselves and living with insecurities?
Host Caitlyn Becker and a team of lifestyle bloggers including Liz Casey from Big Body Beautiful talked about how to combat the negative messages put out by the media.
During the show, Liz talks about how the completely and utterly adores her body! She accepts that she is a bigger size, and trying to become skinny isn’t her goal, but maintaining a fit healthy lifestyle for her body shape.
“I am much bigger than the average, the ‘norm,’ and I absolutely adore my body,” She said. “I love it, I love every single bit of it.”
Casey also stressed that, though she personally usually doesn’t wear makeup or worry about her clothing, she understands how important those things are to many women’s sense of confidence.
“You have to do what’s right for your soul… what’s right for your journey.”
Do you think all the body positive messages out there are working? Are you more influenced by the media in a way that makes you feel insecure about yourself or confident? If it is the former, then we have a lot of work to do. We will work tirelessly to continue speaking out and promoting any healthy, positive and empowering messages for women out there.
