Introducing GREEN TIDE RISING – A Podcast Spotlighting The Latin American Green Wave Movement for Abortion Rights

Roe v. Wade once made the United States a global leader for reproductive rights. Hard to imagine now, right? Since it was overturned, abortion access has been on a steady decline nationwide.

So who’s leading the way now?

Introducing GREEN TIDE RISING, an 8-episode, bilingual, audio and video series spotlighting the Latin American Green Wave Movement and how this feminist movement has shaped the most progressive abortion policies in the world.

Co-hosted by (our founder!) Asha Dahya, who is also the series Creator and Executive Producer, and Monica Morales-Garcia who is also the Story Producer, the series features feminist lawyer and reproductive rights advocate Ximena Casas Isaza, who is leading a new first-of-its-kind research tracking the trends and impact of abortion criminalization across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Through Ximena, audiences will meet the people who’ve turned the fight for reproductive
justice into a powerful feminist movement. Green Tide Rising examines the impact of abortion bans that
have criminalized pregnant people across Latin America, and how the U.S. could face the same fate if we don’t act now.

Green Tide Rising is a call-to-action from the Global South to the Global North, unveiling a
blueprint for radical change as the U.S. faces an election that will define the future of reproductive rights.

Why Now?

With all 8 episodes being released weekly in the lead up to the November 5 Presidential election, listeners have the chance to hear stories and expertise that center the voices of women of color. Because if it’s policy chance we want, narrative change is the tool we need on the road to achieving this. That’s why this series is so important.

Additionally, there is some powerful data to underscore why championing abortion access is the right mote. Abortion bans aren’t just a public health crisis; they’re bad for business. State economies lose
an estimated $105 billion annually due to reproductive care restrictions, and those who are fighting back don’t have access to the necessary funding. On the flip side, companies thrive when they advocate for reproductive rights.

On the voting front, abortion is a winning issue, especially when the vote to protect access to all forms of reproductive healthcare is put directly in the hands of voters. Since the 2022 Dobbs Supreme Court Decision which overturned Roe v Wade, every state that has voted on an abortion ballot measure has overwhelmingly decided in favor of it, even in predominantly conservative-led states like Kansas and Ohio.

Launching on the eve of Hispanic Heritage Month, the podcast will be available on all audio platforms, and the accompanying video series, ‘Entonces’ is available on the Green Tide Rising Youtube Channel.
