It is the film that is getting a lot of buzz right now, with its release coming just in time for International Women’s Day. ‘Rule Breakers’, the story of Afghanistan’s first all-girls robotics team, has been called a “beam of light” (Variety) illuminating audiences of the resilience of women and girls under the harsh impact of Taliban oppression.
In a nation where educating girls is seen as rebellion, a visionary woman, Roya Mahboob (played by Nikohl Boosheri) dares to teach young minds to dream. When their innovation draws global attention, their success sparks hope—and opposition. As threats loom and sacrifices are made, their courage and unity ignite a movement that could forever transform the world. The robotics team members are played by Mariam Saraj (Arezo), Sarah Malal Rowe (Haadiya), Nina Hosseinzadeh (Taara) and Amber Afzali (Esin). It is a heartwarming and inspiring display of courage and determination despite the barriers.
The New York Times describes it as an “underdog drama with a twist”, demonstrating the can-do spirit of the robotics team led by Mahboob, while also reminding us what is at stake for those who dare to push back against restrictions in a country where the notion of women’s rights are actively being taken away.
Actress Amber Afzali brings more than her acting chops to the role of Esin – she also brings first-hand knowledge of the importance of elevating women’s stories on screen that challenge stereotypes about Afghani women and girls. As the daughter of Afghan immigrant parents, Afzali is establishing herself as a dedicated activist for political and cultural issues, particularly those affecting Afghan women. She has strong connections with the Afghan American Community Organization and has also worked with Drapen i Havet, a non-profit humanitarian organization that provides support to refugees.
We had the chance to go behind the scenes of the film with Amber, get a sense of the potential cultural impact of this film, and what she hopes audiences will walk away with after leaving the theater.
When did you first get involved in ‘Rule Breakers’, and learn that you landed the role of Esin – one of Afghanistan’s first female robotics team members?
I first got involved when my manager sent me an audition for the project, titled ‘Afghan Dreamers’ at the time, and honestly, I was beyond excited just to be considered for such an amazing project. It was actually my first audition, so when I found out I landed the role, I was in complete shock and joy! The chance to play one of Afghanistan’s first female robotics team members felt so monumental, especially because the story wasn’t about war or struggle but about these incredible young women and their empowerment. I couldn’t wait to dive into it and be part of something so inspiring.
As the daughter of Afghan immigrant parents, this story must be more personal than other projects for you. Can you share any of the emotion behind being involved in this project?
‘Rule Breakers’ is incredibly personal for me. As the daughter of Afghan immigrant parents, the opportunity to play a character in a story that centers around Afghan women, their resilience, and their achievements really hit home. Growing up, I didn’t see many stories like this in Hollywood, especially ones that highlighted strength and empowerment instead of just focusing on struggle and war. It was emotional to portray a young Afghan girl who is defying the odds and showing the world her power—something I deeply resonate with, both personally and as an actor. This story felt like a celebration of my culture, and it meant so much to be a part of it.
This film feels very timely, especially as we have seen horrific news about the treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan under the Taliban, and their rights being stripped even further. What cultural and social message do you think ‘Rule Breakers’ says to the world?
‘Rule Breakers’ highlights the incredible strength and resilience of Afghan women, showing that even in the face of adversity, they continue to push boundaries and pursue their dreams. With everything happening in Afghanistan under the Taliban, this film sends a powerful social and cultural message about empowerment.
It shows that, no matter what rights the Taliban continue to strip, Afghan women will always have an innate power and strength within them that will ultimately prevail. The film reminds the world that women in Afghanistan—just like women everywhere—have dreams, ambition, and the ability to make incredible change. It’s a story that speaks to the importance of education, opportunity, and the unbreakable spirit of women.
Alongside your acting career, you are also an activist, having strong ties to the Afghan American community. What are you currently advocating for, and what can you tell us about what women and girls are currently experiencing?
I’m deeply passionate about advocating for the rights and well-being of women and girls, particularly those in Afghanistan and the broader Afghan American community. Right now, I’m focused on raising awareness about the challenges Afghan women and girls are facing, especially under the Taliban’s regime, where their rights are continuously being stripped away. Women and girls are being denied basic freedoms, including access to education, work, and even the ability to move freely in society. These are fundamental rights that every person should have, and it’s heartbreaking to see so many strong, capable women being silenced.
I’m also advocating for more visibility of Afghan women’s strength and resilience—not just in times of struggle, but in moments of triumph, like the young girls in Rule Breakers who are defying the odds. It’s important to highlight these stories, showing that despite everything, Afghan women continue to push forward, pursue their dreams, and empower future generations. The fight for equality and opportunity is ongoing, and I believe that by amplifying these voices, we can help create change and bring hope to those who need it most.
You have also done work with Drapen i Havet, which provides support to refugees. Why is this cause important to you?
Supporting refugees is something that resonates deeply with me because there are so many Afghan refugees, as well as refugees from other war-torn regions, who are seeking safety and a better future. As the daughter of Afghan immigrant parents and grandparents, I understand how life-changing it can be to be given an opportunity to start fresh and build a new life abroad.
I’m so grateful my family was able to do that, and I wish the same for others who are forced to flee their homes in search of safety. It isn’t fair that some people are denied opportunities for a better life simply because of where they are born. Every person deserves a chance to live in peace and have access to the same opportunities, regardless of their background or birthplace.
Drapen i Havet is a humanitarian nonprofit organization that does incredible work supporting refugees by providing education, basic services, and even recreational activities. They help create a sense of stability and community for those who’ve lost so much, offering them the resources they need to rebuild their lives and feel valued again. Being able to have worked with them and supported their mission is something that feels really meaningful to me.
What was it like having the real Roya Mahboob involved in the creation of this film, and her sister Elaha as one of the writers?
Such a privilege. She’s incredibly inspiring, and hearing her firsthand stories about the robotics team added so much depth to the film. Her passion for empowering young women really came through in every aspect of the project.
Having her sister Elaha as one of the writers was also amazing. Her writing captured the authenticity of the story and the true essence of these girls’ experiences, not only because she is a talented storyteller, but also because she lived these moments firsthand! It was an honor to be part of a film so deeply connected to their lives.
You also got to work with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and ‘The Bold Type’s’ Nikhol Boosheri. Can you tell guys more about that experience with these actresses, and what you loved most about working with them?
Working with Phoebe Waller-Bridge was such a unique and fun experience. She’s so chill and effortlessly funny, always bringing humor to any situation without trying. We even bonded over video games like ‘Resident Evil’ and ‘Tomb Raider’, which was a fun surprise. Her easy-going nature made the experience inspiring and enjoyable.
Nikohl Boosheri is a skilled actress with such a grounded presence. She’s a joy to watch and learn from, always pitching ideas for scenes and really taking her time to immerse herself in the character and scene. Before filming began, she invited us girls to her house for a small get-together, which was such a warm gesture. Working with her felt like being part of a true team effort.
What do you hope audiences will love most about ‘Rule Breakers’ especially as it debuts during Women’s History Month and in the lead up to International Women’s Day?
I hope audiences will be inspired by ‘Rule Breakers’. I hope they love how unique this kind of storytelling is in Hollywood when it comes to showing Afghanistan, and I hope they let the powerful spirit of Roya and the girls flow through them. The film is about more than just overcoming challenges; it’s about celebrating the strength, ambition, and resilience of young women who are shaping their own futures.
I want people to walk away feeling empowered by the story of these girls who are breaking barriers and showing the world that women’s voices matter—especially in places where they’ve often been silenced and especially in STEM. It’s a celebration of women’s potential, and I’m excited for everyone to experience that message.
What are you working on next, and where can we follow along with your creative journey?
