Meet Dr. April Patterson, known as “Dr. Patty” – a highly trained and experienced cosmetic and restorative dentist based in South Florida, who works at the forefront of the latest dental technology and research.
In addition to being one of the first dental spas in the country, her dental boutique specializes in relaxation dentistry which aims to remove the fear and anxiety associated with dental visits by creating a welcoming and relaxing environment for clients. Just imagine if the sights, sounds and smells of the dentist office closely resembled those of a world-class spa. Dr. Patty’s dental boutique and day spa promises to pamper clients with state-of-the-art, high-end dental care coupled with the multi-sensory amenities and treatments of a spa.
Each client is personally greeted upon arrival and treated to the complimentary champagne, wine and Nespresso coffee bar. A locker room stocked with complimentary robes and slippers and a private shower area is available before and after treatments. Client perks in the exam room include: a refreshing lemon-scented warm towel service; silky paraffin wax treatment for hands; temple massage therapy, cucumber eye press and personalized movie and music selections.
The jarring sounds of buzzing drills have been replaced with nearly noiseless, electronic tools and further silenced by relaxing music available in surround sound and via complimentary earbuds. The malodorous scent of chemicals has been replaced by aromatherapy diffused through the office ventilation system and the use of odor-free, eco-friendly products.
Dr. Patty’s extensive menu of smile revitalization services includes Invisalign®, Six Month Smiles® and Clear Correct which straighten teeth in a quarter of the time of ordinary orthodontics. In addition, Dr. Patty administers Facial Rejuvenation treatments including Botox and fillers. She also offers aesthetician services and eyelash extensions provided by a specialist.
Dr. Patty’s Dental Boutique features the latest dental technology on the market: dental procedures are televised, digital photography and intra-oral cameras are used to give clients an up-close look into their mouths for the early detection of cavities, the Digital Smile Makeover allows clients to leave with a real photo of what their new smile would look like after a cosmetic treatment, and computerized shade matching are just a few of the advances in oral health care utilized by Dr. Patty and her board certified team of dental hygienists.
In addition to her impressive work as a female, black-owned business, Dr. Patty is an active member of the Fort Lauderdale community. She actively participates with Women In Distress of Broward County, the Humane Society of Broward County, Emerge Broward and the Museum of Discovery and Science.
Dr. Patty told us how simply the fact that she is a black woman owning a dental spa business in what is typically a white and male-dominated space comes with its own challenges, which she doesn’t shy away from taking on.
“Every now and again a client looks at me when I walk in the room and says ‘Where is the Dr?'” she told us via email.
“I’ve had a new client walk in looking for a new dentist and blatantly walk out in disbelief when my team pointed to me telling her that I was the Dr. Then there are clients who just flat out say they are excited that I’m not an old white man! Overall, most of my clients already have researched and vetted me for the Smile makeovers and cosmetic dentistry,” she added.
As a nation we are seeing a huge push right now to support black-owned businesses in light of the Black Lives Matter marches and protests (and the growing awareness of how each of us can deal with systemic racism). Dr. Patty shared what it means to her personally, and how to best support businesses like Dr. Patty’s Dental Spa.
“I believe attention on great black-owned businesses is incredible. I currently have nail art displaying BLM on my nails along with the words unity. This has helped bring up the conversation with clients in a few circumstances. Supporting my business comes in many forms such as coming in, reviews, referrals, features and many more,” she said.
We also wanted to know about her work with the Women In Distress of Broward County, and Dr. Patty says being a mom herself and seeing the mothers involved in this organization is just one aspect of why she is passionate about it.
“I spent some time learning about this organization as I’m committed to supporting the cause of women being able to get back on their feet after traumatic experiences. It’s important for be because I believe it takes a lot of strength for a mom to raise a child and support them, especially alone and when violence is in the picture,” she said.
