The Celebrities Who Exemplify The Quote “Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History”

Have you ever asked yourself what makes a woman powerful? Is it her educational background? Is it her well-connected parents? Is it the way she dresses? Or perhaps her career choice? We’d like to bring a new line of thought to the table that it is often the women who throw off the constraints of society and buck traditions to become the strong, empowered women we know and love.

We have observed that it is often the trouble-makers or the “least likely to succeed” type women who make the best role models in the end because they end up possessing something other women may not: perspective. And that comes from a variety of experiences. Living this kind of life is definitely not for everyone, but of those that do end up with the label of “good girl gone bad” have managed to successfully use it as a launching pad to greatness.

This kind of confidence is something many of us are familiar with, especially because we have seen it in a number of celebrities. While some female celebs are content being known as the fashionable celebrities or style icons, there are others who are happy to use their image as a controversial star as a means of spreading impactful messages. Here are a few we came up with.

Selena Gomez is one pop star who some may think of as the girl next door, and she has always been superstar chic. We’ve seen her grow from a young Disney Channel star into a woman who is channeling her own path away from the conservative constraints. While is has always been a controversial issue when Disney stars step out from behind the Mickey ears, people like Selena have shown making her own mature choices doesn’t make her an anomaly, it makes her a confident woman.

Her relationship with another controversial star, Justin Bieber, was the talk of many media headlines, but in her own life Selena’s direction toward her faith in God, and inspiring her generation of young fans to use their voice for change have made her a prime example of what a role model looks like.

Speaking of Disney stars, probably the most controversial we have seen in a long time is Miley Cyrus. After her separation from former fiance Liam Hemsworth, her life took a dramatic turn, one which she was heavily judged for. Her outfit choices, her haircut, her sexual moves on stage and questionable music video content made her the talk of the interwebs for all the wrong reasons.

But after the public became used to seeing her in this way, she was able to share with fans and the media what her “movement” was all about: female empowerment and feminism. All of a sudden her passion for the homeless youth, for the LGBTQ community and for allowing women to have a voice of their own made many turn heads, nodding in agreement with her.

She has been very outspoken challenging the sexist double standards and pressure put on women, especially in the music industry. Recently in an interview with Marie Claire magazine, she questioned why her showing her body in a certain way on stage or in magazines is seen as “controversial”, but other artists like Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar can show guns in music videos and rap about drugs (respectively) and be considered “acceptable”.

Speaking of which, singing sensation Taylor Swift is good at a lot of things: singing, writing songs, playing guitar, talking about the importance of feminism, making friends with famous actresses and models, and so on. So it’s not shocking that she knows exactly how to show her views in a relate-able and eloquent way. Recently she expressed her view on feminism where she said: “I do not need some guy around in order to get inspiration, in order to make a great record, in order to live my life, in order to feel okay with myself”.

She said this because in her earlier albums, she was know to write songs about her breakups, many of them with famous men like One Direction’s Harry Styles, and singer John Mayer.

But as she matured and surrounded herself with strong women like Lena Dunham, Taylor started to express that she is over being a serial dater, and instead prefers the company of her close girlfriends. This change of heart has also been reflected in her music. Selena Gomez, Cara Delevingne, Gigi Hadid, Lena Dunham, Hayley Williams, and Cindy Crawford can all be seen in Taylor Swift music video “Bad Blood” where all the female celebrities play action heroes, it certainly got people talking.

This is the type of video showing girls’ power that we have not seen in music in a long time, which is why it was such a hotly debated topic of conversation.

Strong women who go against traditional standards aren’t just seen in the celebrity world. The reach back throughout ancient history. In ancient Egypt, the exotic and wise Cleopatra is one of the most infamous women in history that conquered men and countries, and she also had the vision to make Egypt become an independent monarch through her leadership. The very thought of this Pharaoh brings inspirational thought of grace, power and grandeur.

We can find many stories about her in history books and on the History Channel, or if you want to get a dose of the grandeur of Cleopatra in a way that’s perhaps more exciting, you can visit the one of the MagicalVegas slots casino. Either way, her beauty, power, and notoriety looms large and is an ancient character more often known than other men and women. We’ve all heard that saying:

And finally, probably the best example of a woman who has made a drastic change from her controversial and “wild” past is Oscar-winning actress and director Angelina Jolie. From keeping vials of her boyfriend’s blood in around her neck and batting a heroine and cocaine addiction to becoming a United Nations Ambassador is an inspiration to other women.

She has been splitting her time raising 6 kids, while at the same time managing a film career as well as her humanitarian work to better the world. She has also undergone a preventive double mastectomy, which showed her ability to still be vulnerable with the public, but for a good cause: women’s health.

We can see from these few examples, and many from the past that it is indeed the controversial, “mis-behaved” and supposed “bad girls” who are often the ones remembered as changing attitudes, societies and history. It is not everyone’s path to follow, and there are plenty of women who live within the boundaries of society to make a huge impact.

We just want all the misfits, the outsiders, the rule-breakers and the women who told they will never “fit in” to know you are exactly where you are meant to be! Own it, and use your story to make a difference.
