Self-care for entrepreneurs isn’t about bubble baths and Instagrom worthy moments. It’s about strategic resilience.
Remember those blue bumpers at the bowling alley when you were a kid? The ones that kept you from embarrassing yourself with gutter balls, and being able to play the game? That’s how I think of my own self-care and what entrepreneurs need to know– it’s not cute, it’s crucial.
Look, I get it. You’re a high-achiever with something to prove. Maybe you’re trying to make your product change the world, or you’re determined to show everyone you can thrive without being an employee. Whatever your drive, it’s probably pushing “me time” right off your to-do list.
I’ve been there, done that, and got the burnout t-shirt. Trust me, self-abandonment is a skill we’ve all mastered. But neglecting yourself is like trying to drive a car without gas. You might coast for a while, but eventually, you’re gonna end up stranded.
The Burnout Reality Check
It began subtly – missed appointments, disproportionate reactions to minor setbacks, an increasing reliance on stimulants. But the effects compounded rapidly. My creativity waned, decision-making became compromised, and personal relationships suffered.
The wake-up call came when I had absolutely no desire to run my business anymore (I had a global fashion line for 10 years) and suddenly had to push hard on the brake pad, dropping everything with no warning for 2 weeks just so I could decide if I even wanted to continue. It was clear: something had to change. This realization led me to develop a strategic approach to self-care—one designed for high-performing entrepreneurs.
I realized I cannot be trusted. When thrown back into the mix, I go back to my old habits and return right to over-working. That’s when I started implementing these “blue bumpers” of self-care.
So, let’s talk real self-care for all my hustle queens out there.
Strategic Self-Care: Two Core Principles
- Tip #1: Nervous System Regulation
Entrepreneurship is a constant trigger. Client demands, technological failures, external judgments – these stressors are relentless. The key to maintaining composure and accessing your optimal decision-making capabilities lies in mastering nervous system regulation.
This isn’t about relaxation techniques. It’s about training your physiological responses to stress. Here are some effective methods:
- Rapid physical movement (e.g., brief intense exercise)
- Grounding practices in nature
- Breathwork techniques (e.g., alternate nostril breathing)
- EFT Tapping
- Vocal toning (a personal favorite)
The goal is to find your unique reset button – a technique that quickly shifts you from a reactive state to a responsive one.
Case in point: When a major investor unexpectedly withdrew, my initial impulse was panic. Instead, I excused myself, performed a targeted EFT session, and returned to the situation with clarity and focus. The result? The investor rejoined a week later, impressed by our composed response to the setback.
- Tip #2: Schedule “Grounded CEO Spirit Time”
Yeah, I know it sounds woo-woo, but hear me out. As entrepreneurs, we’re wired to push through and ignore our needs. But I have found that my best ideas, my strategic problem skills, really come up when I take time to be in reflection and to connect with my inner CEO (or the calmed frontal lobe of our brains).
So here is what I do. I schedule a meeting with my inner CEO and put it on my calendar every other day at the same time. I call these sessions “Grounded CEO Spirit Time” – but you can name yours whatever feels most aligned with you and what you need. During this time, I might hit the sauna, meditate, or just sit on the beach doing nothing. The key? No work allowed. This is inner work time.
The impact of this practice can be profound. During one such session, while contemplating the ocean, I resolved a sales strategy dilemma that was plaguing me. The solution – a synthesis of two seemingly incompatible directions – emerged effortlessly once I created the mental space for it.
But if I don’t schedule this time for myself? It never happens.
The Self-Care Ripple Effect
Implementing these strategies doesn’t just benefit you; it transforms your entire business ecosystem. When I prioritized my well-being, the shift was palpable. Team morale improved, creativity flourished, and our company culture evolved from stress-driven to innovation-focused.
Moreover, the benefits extended beyond the professional realm. Personal relationships, often strained by entrepreneurial demands, began to thrive again. Presence and engagement replaced constant distraction.
The Bottom Line
For entrepreneurs, self-care isn’t optional – it’s a strategic imperative. It’s not about indulgence; it’s about creating systems that prevent burnout and optimize performance.
You are your business’s most critical asset. Treat yourself accordingly. Implement these simple strategies – regulate your nervous system, schedule introspection, and watch as your capacity for innovation and leadership expands.
If you’re thinking you don’t have time for this, I hear you. I still think this every single week. That feeling of “I don’t have enough time” will continue to come up for you, and is something you get to continually address, by giving yourself the luxury of time.
Eventually, it will become second nature and will crave these practices for yourself. And when that happens you know you have upgraded to a bowling lane without the bumpers, which is the whole goal anyway.
It’s time to redefine what it means to be a successful entrepreneur. True success isn’t measured by hours worked or sacrifices made. It’s about building something extraordinary while maintaining your most valuable resource – yourself.
Implement these strategies. Your future self – and your business – will thank you.
