The Female Artist Responsible For Ending The Beatles’ 40 Year Record-Breaking Chart Run

This snippet of entertainment news pricked our ears for two reasons: 1) It was about breaking a Beatles record, and 2) It was a woman who was responsible!

Her name is Emeli Sande and she is the hottest piece of music property to come out of the UK since Adele blew up our airwaves with ’21’. She is a Scottish singer who has impressed the likes of Simon Cowell and now has achieved something very impressive.

Emeli has broken The Beatles’ long-standing record for the most consecutive weeks spent in the top 10 of the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart.

Her Brit Award-winning debut album, Our Version of Events, released in February 2012, has held a slot in the charts for 63 consecutive weeks, beating the previous record held by The Beatles for their release Please Please Me, which spent 62 weeks in the top 10 between 1963 and 1964. Well done superwoman Emeli!

While it was ground breaking what the Fab Four did back in the 60s, it is still an incredible milestone for a young female artist yet to be a household name around the globe. Goes to show the power of the fan and how social media, the internet and the music industry has changed so radically over the last 4 decades.

Sande’s Our Version of Events has gone on to become the bestselling album of 2012 in the U.K. with over 1.82 million copies sold, according to the Official Albums Chart.

Emeli considers it an honor to have achieved what she has, as she explains to the Official Charts Company in the UK:

“The Beatles are the greatest band of all time and their legacy lives on and continues to inspire all of us that make music,” she said. “I’m so happy that so many people have connected with the stories and the songs on the record, this really is our version of events now.”

We just downloaded the album and cannot say enough great things about it and also can’t stop listening to it.

Just when we all thought Girl Power died out with the Spice Girls in the 90s, this woman comes and knocks our socks off and blows the music industry away. There are a lot of talented females taking the charts by storm: Adele, Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift just to name a few. We hope this trend continues and that these girls set and break new records.
