WEEKLY WRAP UP VIDEO: OITNB Revolutionizing Female Representation On TV

‘Orange Is The New Black’ is revolutionizing the way women are representing in mainstream TV. The hit show has such a diverse array of female characters, including the very first black transgender woman featured in a main role, Laverne Cox. Our Weekly Wrap Up Video this week talks about why representation on such a mainstream platform is important.

This show is quite the anomaly amongst many male-dominated drama’s as OITNB has 99% female cast, and the executive producer is also a woman, Jenji Kohan who produced ‘Weeds’.

Laverne Cox, who plays transgender inmate Sophia Bursett told Elle Magazine that the show is not only redefining the boundaries of feminism by adding transgender voices to the conversation, but it is also allowing for people to see a more human side of the trans community.

Laverne was featured on the cover of Time magazine because she has been instrumental in changing people’s attitudes by turning the focus away from genitalia to the transgender person as a whole.

In a sense this echoes the same sort of sentiment that women in general want to be known for: equal human beings rather than just dismembered body parts which have been objectified for far too long in the media.

Danielle Brooks who plays Taystee also mentions that the show is redefining beauty by allowing a cast of women to be featured without makeup, and still be likeable.

With the massive worldwide success of female driven films such as ‘Frozen’, ‘Maleficent‘, ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire‘, and ‘The Fault In Our Stars’, it’s no wonder TV shows and movies based on women’s stories are such a hit. They are no longer an exception to the rule. Women make up half of the movie-going audience, and are desperate to see more of our stories.
