Congrats on the recent release of your second book and accompanying short film! How does it feel to have these projects out in the world?

Having these projects out in the world brings me immense joy and pride. It’s a fulfilling experience that stands out as one of the most inspiring moments of my life, second only to the joy of having my children. A particularly memorable occasion was when I screened the movie for my birthday alongside the release of my second book. Reflecting on the journey from the release of the first book just a year earlier, I had envisioned and committed to unveiling the second one the following year, knowing that I would also have a movie coming out around the same time, thanks to the generosity of the Canada Council of the Arts.

Standing there, looking out into the audience, and witnessing my reflection in the faces of those in attendance was a powerful moment. The fact that they honored me with a standing ovation made it clear that the achievement wasn’t solely mine; it belonged to all of us. It’s a shared experience, and knowing that the impact extended beyond just myself adds a profound layer of meaning to the fulfillment I feel in having these projects out in the world.

Your new book is the follow up to your successful first novel “The Adventures of a Recovering Sex Addict: Vol.1 Married Men and F**k Boys”. What made you want to write a sequel?

I realized the potential to contribute to an ongoing narrative—one that allows characters and readers alike to grow and develop. My emphasis on encouraging critical thinking reflects my commitment to fostering empathy and compassion both in individual lives and in the broader world.

By delving deeper into the internal conflicts faced by Cali Church who is grappling with addiction, trauma, and shame, my goal is to shed light on the complexities of these struggles. This exploration serves not only as a means of personal healing but also to contribute positively to the community. Cali Church, as a resilient and resourceful character, stands as an example for readers on how to navigate personal challenges.

It’s clear that my sequel is not just a continuation of a story but a platform for addressing important themes and issues, fostering understanding, and ultimately contributing to the healing of both individuals and the community at large. The narrative appears to be a tool for empowerment, encouraging readers to reflect on their own experiences and promoting positive change.

Author and filmmaker L.A Wade

As a multifaceted artist, why is storytelling across different mediums important to you?

Engaging with various artistic mediums allows me to explore and unravel important themes in a multifaceted way. Writing books, directing short films, and expressing ideas through podcasting and speaking engagements offer unique avenues to delve into the intricacies of human behavior. Each medium serves as a distinct canvas to convey stories and messages, enriching the narrative experience for diverse audiences.

In the realm of writing books, I find the space to craft detailed narratives, providing readers with an immersive journey into the complexities of the human experience. Through storytelling, I can illuminate nuanced aspects of behavior, fostering a deeper understanding that resonates with a wide range of readers.

Directing a short film adds a visual and auditory dimension to my storytelling toolkit. The visual medium allows me to capture emotions, nuances, and perspectives that words alone might not fully convey. It’s an opportunity to create a sensory experience that resonates on a different level, bringing my messages to life through the power of moving images.

Podcasting and speaking engagements offer an immediate and personal connection with audiences. The spoken word allows for a direct and intimate conversation, enabling me to share insights, discuss important themes, and connect with listeners on a more personal level. It’s a dynamic platform to address contemporary issues, fostering thought-provoking discussions that reach beyond the boundaries of traditional storytelling.

By utilizing these diverse mediums, I aim to create a tapestry of storytelling that speaks to people from various walks of life. Each medium serves as a tool to emphasize the richness and complexity of human behavior, fostering a shared understanding that transcends differences.

Can you share more about your own personal journey which you drew from in these books, and tell us why you wanted to share this?

When I decided to create the character Cali Church as the protagonist, it was a deliberate choice to make her an external representation of my own life, loves, and relational experiences. Initially, I hesitated, feeling that as a Black woman, sharing my story might not attract a broad following. However, the raw and genuine nature of my experiences, coupled with insights gained from therapy at Women’s College Hospital, made me realize that my personal journey could resonate with many others.

Illustrating Cali on the book cover made me more relatable to those who struggle to perceive the humanity in Black women. This became a powerful tool for me to confront and express the challenging moments in my life. From the loss of my father and a 16-year-long marriage ending in divorce to the physical injuries from my car accidents, financial hardships, and the weight of past and present experiences—putting these elements on the page or in cinematic shots became a therapeutic process. It allowed me to work through the emotions tied to these events and navigate the healing process alongside Cali.

Every interaction Cali has in the stories, much like myself, becomes an opportunity for growth and self-improvement. The motto I live by and share with her is, “Let your living be your healing, and let the adventures begin.” This encapsulates my approach to life-embracing openness and curiosity, even in the face of challenges.

Sharing my personal journey through Cali Church was essential because so often, people shy away from discussing experiences that evoke feelings of shame. By opening up about my struggles and triumphs, I hope to create a space for others to do the same. It’s about breaking the silence around the aspects of our lives that carry weight and finding strength in vulnerability. Ultimately, I wanted to convey that healing and growth can emerge from embracing one’s story, no matter how difficult it may be.

There is still so much taboo around sex addiction, and especially from the female perspective given how female sexuality is so feared and shunned. What kind of misconceptions do you hope to break down through your books and film? What kind of conversations do you hope your books will start?

I aspire for my books, the movie, and the Adventure + Healing tour to spark meaningful conversations that promote relational wellness. Through these platforms, I hope to tackle taboo topics head-on, encouraging open dialogue and breaking the silence surrounding issues that often go unaddressed. By delving into these themes, I aim to foster empathy and inclusivity, creating a space for understanding and connection among diverse audiences.

The overarching goal is to inspire transformative conversations through the lessons drawn from my own life. I want these stories to serve as catalysts for personal growth, encouraging readers, viewers, and participants in the Adventure + Healing tour to reflect on their own experiences. Through shared narratives, I hope to instigate positive change, encouraging individuals to navigate their own journeys with resilience, compassion, and a commitment to relational well-being.

Vulnerability can be a rather terrifying concept for a lot of people. How have you managed to overcome any fears about this, when writing your books and films?

In addressing the fears linked to vulnerability within my creative pursuits, I drew on strategies informed by my experiences in group therapy sessions focused on overcoming complex PTSD. Implementing therapeutic approaches such as Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), I learned to radically accept the contradictions in my life. This journey led me to prioritize authenticity as a powerful tool for conquering shame and fear. Recognizing the inherent strength in authenticity, I embraced and acknowledged my vulnerabilities, fortifying my storytelling with a narrative that is both relatable and genuine. By presenting myself with all my flaws, I’ve enabled readers and viewers to connect with the unfiltered aspects of the human experience.

Additionally, I underwent a transformation in my perspective on vulnerability. Rather than viewing it as a weakness, I reframed vulnerability as a source of strength and courage. Acknowledging that everyone faces challenges and moments of vulnerability, I made a conscious choice to share these experiences in my writing and filmmaking. This decision facilitated deeper connections with others navigating similar emotions, turning vulnerability into a bridge for empathy and understanding.

Lastly, I navigated fears associated with vulnerability by cultivating self-compassion. Extending the same kindness and understanding to myself as I would to a friend facing challenges, this self-compassion allowed me to approach my vulnerabilities with acceptance and without judgment. Consequently, the fear of external judgment diminished, empowering me to authentically share my experiences. This shift in mindset not only contributed to a healthier self-image but also created a compassionate and supportive environment for exploring and expressing vulnerabilities within my creative work.

You have also used humor in your film and writing to help make the topic of sex addiction relatable. Can you tell us how comedy can be such a powerful tool for connection in film and storytelling?

Laughter is inherently healing, especially when finding joy in challenging situations. Comedy thrives on the juxtaposition of tragedy, a theme that has consistently shaped my own life. The ability to infuse humor into narratives about difficult topics, like sex addiction, allows audiences to connect on a deeper level, creating a shared experience that fosters understanding and relatability.

With the title of your second book being “The Adventures of a Recovering Sex Addict Vol. 2: Friends with Benefits but Mostly Liabilities”, can you tell us more about the Liabilities that readers will learn about?

This book delves into both positive and negative aspects of platonic and intimate relationships. The book concludes with a S.W.O.T. analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) to help readers identify liabilities in their own relationships. This strategic assessment reveals that not every liability necessitates discarding a friendship at the first sign of distress. It encourages readers to weigh the benefits against the liabilities, fostering a nuanced understanding of the relationships in their lives. Volume 2 also explores the liabilities of the protagonist, Cali Church, shedding light on her thought process and offering insight into what it’s like to be in a relationship with someone dealing with trauma and addiction. The narrative exposes how individuals can trigger one another, prompting a decision-making process that considers multiple factors.

How do you hope your stories and films will become a source of empowerment for readers, especially women?

As a woman who has grappled with giving away power in various relationships due to a lack of understanding of my own worth, I aim to empower readers, especially women, by showcasing examples of losing, gaining, and regaining personal power. I want individuals to recognize their internal strength beyond societal labels and expectations. Through these narratives, I hope to inspire a deep understanding of self, prompting readers to conduct their own personal S.W.O.T. analysis. This process will empower them to discern how and why they may tend to relinquish their power, fostering greater self-awareness.

Themes of resilience, self-discovery and connection are prominent in both your books. What do you want readers to take to heart from these themes?

I want readers to internalize the importance of resilience in navigating life’s challenges, the ongoing journey of self-discovery, and the transformative power of meaningful connections. These themes collectively underscore the potential for growth, strength, and fulfillment that can be found within one’s own experiences and relationships. Ultimately, I hope readers are inspired to embrace these themes in their own lives, fostering a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

How do you hope readers will be challenged by the stories they read in your books?

In my literary work, the opening chapter, titled “This is a Trigger Warning” serves as a deliberate acknowledgment of the potential impact of the content. I aim to create a space that respects the sensitivities of my readers, recognizing that certain themes may evoke emotional responses. While I am cautious not to cause harm or retrigger any painful experiences, the essence of truth demands that readers be challenged by the narratives they encounter.

Through thought-provoking storytelling, I intend to present readers with situations and perspectives that may challenge their preconceptions, evoke introspection, and prompt a reevaluation of their own beliefs and experiences. The intention is not to inflict discomfort for its own sake but to invite readers into a journey of self-discovery, empathy, and expanded understanding.

By confronting challenging narratives, readers are encouraged to engage with the complexities of the human experience, fostering a space for reflection and growth. The hope is that these challenges, while respectful of readers’ emotional well-being, contribute to a richer and more nuanced appreciation of the intricate tapestry of life depicted in the stories.
